TINIKLING FOLK DANCE UNIT
Above are the third grade boys and girls performing their final project of Tinikling Dance. Tinikling Dance is a native folk style dance in the Philippines. They learned how to do the basic step first. Then they learned more advanced steps. The collaboration of music with the physical movement of dance allowed the students to experience the concept of steady beat and rhythm physically -- rather than watching others dance.
Planning for this differentiated instruction lesson was inherent to an active learning pedagogical approach to music education, growing from experiences and applying new knowledge. The end goal was to awaken the creative potential in each individual learner. There is no "one size fits all", or a "one way street map" to learning.
"The child's natural inclination to growth and self-express by means of music making and improvisation is encouraged and developed. This is done entirely in terms appropriate to the child" -- Carl Orff
