RECORDER FLUTE INSTRUMENTS
Recorder Flute Program:
What are the main aspects of the Recorder Program?
Our students learn to play the recorder for many reasons. We use this particular instrument as our melody choice for many pieces that we learn. Much like our voice, the recorder has a lovely light sound that is perfect for playing melodies and harmonies accompanied by our xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, drums, and other percussion. We also do a lot of composing and literacy lessons with our recorders as the primary sound source. We play recorder in almost every class, even when it isn't the focus of the lesson. Many times the children will ask to learn a xylophone melody on recorder, so I feel that it has become another wonderful musical tool for exploration for our students.
The fourth grade students will be working on their recorder flute studies beginning in February. Each student is to purchase a recorder flute of their own. Before learning how to play the recorder flute, students had to learn how to read pitches on the treble clef. They also had to master rhythms utilizing the quarter-note, eighth-note, quarter-rest and half-rest. Each music education class will be learning new notes and songs to perform in the final project performance.
Also, students will be able to keep their recorder flutes home to practice. At first, it may be a learning experience for everyone involved. Please encourage your child to blow lightly and softly into the recorder flute. Blowing too hard will cause it to squeak. (not a pleasant sound) This instrument, once mastered, can play many different melodies.
Recorder flutes should be routinely cleaned. You can clean them with soap and water. They are even dishwasher safe on the top rack. :)
If you have an iPad or tablet, I recommend purchasing a recorder app. Your child will have fun playing along with it. I use the "Recorder"app at school. It guides a player along to play a song on their recorder. The app "listens" and will move the music measures along with the playing. The program even teaches how to finger the recorder to play the songs listed. There is even a scoring system! All kids love this app! The app I use is below. Just click on the link.
